10k Value Prop Match

Compares a seller's value proposition against a target company's own 10-K language and returns matched initiatives with quotes and need status.

About this Skill

When to use it

Use this Skill when you want to check whether a target account's 10-K names the problem your pitch solves, so you can ground outbound messaging in the company's own stated priorities instead of generic firmographics. It returns matched initiatives with the literal filing sentence behind each one, and it flags whether the need looks open or already solved in-house. Avoid using it for private or non-SEC-reporting companies, general news or buying-signal scans, or as a single numeric fit score.

What it delivers

You get a per-account match report that shows which filing sentences support or argue against your value proposition, plus a coverage line that states what it read and what it skipped. It grades matches on two separate questions, whether the theme is named and whether the need is still open, so it never reports a company that already solved the problem itself as a warm lead.

How someone would prompt this

Check whether Acme Corp's most recent 10-K mentions anything close to our value proposition around cutting warehouse labor costs through automation, and tell me if it looks like an open need or something they've already solved themselves.

Inputs & outputs

What someone provides before the Skill runs, and the reviewable artifacts it returns.

Inputs

  • 01Value propositionYour pitch in your own words: what you sell, who it is for, and the problem it removes
  • 02Target accountsCompany names, domains, tickers, or SEC CIKs for one or many accounts
  • 03Filing scope
    • Which fiscal year's 10-K to use, defaulting to the most recent
    • which sections to search, defaulting to Business, Risk Factors, and MD&A
  • 04Match strictness
    • How willing you are to count an adjacent, unnamed theme as a match
    • strong matches always require a quotable sentence

Outputs

  • 01Per-account match reportA table listing each account's filing, every match with its quote, section, need status, and evidence basis, ready to drop into outbound personalization.
  • 02Coverage lineA summary line that states which accounts it read, which ones it skipped and why, so you can trust what the report covers and what it leaves out.

Coverage line

6 accounts requested · 5 had a 10-K on file · 5 read in full across Items 1, 1A, 7 · 1 marked not applicable (private) · 1 domain resolved via a paid Clay lookup (declared and approved at Step 4) · of 2 Strong matches, 1 is Open and 1 is Solved in-house — reported separately, not averaged together · of 2 No match found accounts, 1 is Explicit (an actual disqualifying quote) and 1 is Silent (the topic never came up) — also reported separately, since they're different strengths of evidence.

How the Skill runs

Follow the steps in order. Each row includes the full instruction.

01
Confirm Clay connection

The Skill checks your Clay connection, states which workspace it will run in, and confirms that fetching filings and matching them both happen outside Clay at no cost.

Step
02
Collect your inputs

It asks for your value proposition in your own words, the target accounts and their identifiers, the fiscal year, and which 10-K sections to search rather than assuming any of these.

Step
03
Find each account's filing

It resolves each account to its SEC filing using free public lookups, confirms a 10-K exists for the requested year, and fetches the full document itself instead of Clay's scraper so nothing gets cut off.

Agent
04
Run free checks first

It confirms each filing exists and pulls its text before running any paid Clay lookups, and it reserves paid enrichment for accounts it could not resolve for free.

Step
05
Review a small batch

The run stops after 2 to 3 accounts, shows the actual quoted matches, states how many remaining accounts need a paid lookup and its cost, and waits for your approval before continuing.

Step
06
Match filing language to your pitch

It reads the filing sections, pulls out sentences describing specific initiatives or pain points, and checks each one against your value proposition in both supporting and opposing directions.

Step
07
Grade each match separately

It scores whether the filing names your theme (Strong, Possible, or No match) and, separately, whether the need looks open or already solved in-house, keeping the two questions apart.

Output
08
Deliver the report

You get a per-account table listing the filing it used, every match with its quote and need status, and a coverage line noting which accounts it skipped and why.
